Rygge Church – Norway

8″ x 10″ (Oil on Canvas Board)

 Rick Eakins

Well, it’s a HOT August in Texas, but I’m traveling “Virtually”, to the country of Norway.  I found most of the towns to be along the coastal areas and to the south end. Norway is a Scandinavian country encompassing mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords. Oslo, the capital and and the most populous city in Norway.

This painting is of the Rygge kirke (Rygge Church) located in Rygge parish in rural southern Norway. The building material is stone/brick and was built in 1170. Romanesque and Gothic influences can be seen in these churches. About 160 of the 270 stone churches built in Norway are still fully or partially preserved.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Well, it’s September and we travel “Virtually”, to the rugged canyons of Utah, specifically Bryce Canyon National Park.  I selected a canyon scene displaying the brilliant orange rocks, flowing stream and distant mountain ranges. There were lots of pine trees and many dead falls. I have a painter friend traveling this same area right now with his wife and he has been sending back some beautiful photos. This image is from Google’s Streetview, but they had to film this with a shoulder mounted camera walking on the paths that go through the canyons. Thank you google. I hope to travel here soon myself.

Monterey Peninsula, California

For the month of August, 2015, we travel “Virtually”, to the shores of Monterey Peninsula.  I painted a small cove in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. The trees here are very twisted and shaped by the wind off the ocean. Google used a shoulder mounted camera and walked the trails along the rugged coastal area. Great views everywhere you turn.

“Santa Fe Adobe”

Santa Fe, New Mexico

9″ x 12″ (Oil on Canvas Board)

For the month of July, 2015 I visited a region I’m very fond of, Santa Fe, NM. I painted a very familiar Adobe Home on Canyon Road and Delgado Street. This old door way (portal) must have been here forever. I can’t walk up Canyon Road without being amazed by it.  Check out the other ART for this month’s Virtural Paintout at http://virtualpaintout.blogspot.com/

For the month of March, 2015 we traveled to the Island of Greenland.  The population is sparse and not too much is green, except this “Green House”. Most of the people live in fishing villages along both coasts.  Check out the other ART for this month at http://virtualpaintout.blogspot.com/

For the month of February, 2015 we traveled to the Country of Bangladesh.  It is between India, Nepal and Myanmar (Burma) and a coastal area on the Bay of Bengal. This is the 6th Anniversary this month of the “Virtual Paintout” website and I have participated for 3 1/2 years.  Check out the other paintings for this month at http://virtualpaintout.blogspot.com/

Virtual Paintout…January 2015 (Philadelphia)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“Skulling on Schuylkill River”
Philadelphia, PA
8″ x 10″ (Oil on Canvas Board)

For the month of January, 2015 we traveled to Philadelphia, PA. I used “Google Street View” to find a scene similar to one painted by the great American Painter, “Thomas Eakins”. One of his favorite subject matters was rowers on the Schuylkill River. Wish I could paint half as well as him, but I had fun doing this little painting of a single skuller on the river. Hope you enjoy, and check out the other paintings for this month at http://virtualpaintout.blogspot.com/

“Balconies in Rome”

8″ x 10″ Oil on Canvas Board

For the month of December we traveled to Rome, Italy. I used “Google Street View” to roam all over the city, visiting all the historical places. I knew all the other artists would be painting the historical sites, so I chose this building with balconies flowing with flowers and hanging vines. Everywhere I looked could have made a painting.  Hope you enjoy the painting.

“House with Vines”

9″ x 12″ Oil on Canvas Board

Luxembourg is a landlocked country in Europe, bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany. With beautiful scenic views, including pastoral and urban areas. I chose to paint this rural farm house, with all the red vines growing up the side. I enjoy using “Google Street View” to travel and view places I would never get to visit in person. Hope you enjoy the painting.
